Timber Tax

Disaster relief
A casualty loss can result from the damage, destruction or loss of your property from an identifiable event that is sudden, unexpected, or unusual. We assess the damage, help you decide whether to salvage, and document the loss. A casualty loss on your tax return is limited by your timber basis. After the 2025 ice storm, we presented on this topic with the Emmet and Otsego Conservation Districts.
Management Plans
- Plans built around your own goals, whether that’s wildlife, timber income, recreation, or passing the land on
- Forest management plans for the Qualified Forest Program (QFP) and the Commercial Forest program (CF), which can help reduce property taxes on your forest land
- Plans that meet the requirements for state and federal cost-share programs

When your plan calls for a harvest, we may be able to administer the timber sale or refer you to another reputable forester in your area.
